The first three magazine stories below are all about motorcycle tours in Laos.
The fourth article is about a
temple festival I attended in Laos during the course of one of my motorcycle tours.
The first motorcycle touring article, LET
LOOSE IN LAOS », is about the first-ever motorcycle tour allowed inside
Laos. At this point in time, no one knew a
thing about what to expect or what one would see when crossing the Mekong River
for a motorcycle adventure. But that never stopped explorers, did it?
This manuscript, or a variation of it, has been published, at last count, in 15 different magazines and newspapers around the world. This particular version has appeared in MOTORCYCLE INTERNATIONAL, Nov. '95 & MOTORRAD, November 1995.
The second, MIDNIGHT LAOS REVERIE », took place over the Millennium New Year and it was an ASIAN MOTORCYCLE ADVENTURES motorcycle tour. Not much had changed in the five years since the first-ever motorcycle tour, except for a coal mine and the coal trucks we encountered hauling the lignite away on the first driving segment coming in from Thailand. The huge lorries are making an already bad road progressively worse by chewing up the road surface. I shudder to think what this road will look like in a few more seasons.
And another big change was that there are now lots of bridges and earthworks over many of the rivers and streams. This has taken away a lot of the fun and dirtiness from the drive. I don't know about you, but I just love driving a motorcycle through a river.
This manuscript was published by the WALL STREET JOURNAL on April 20, 2000.
The last Laos motorcycle touring article, THE
LAOS LOST CITY MOTORCYCLE TOUR », is about a trip I organized for my
motorcycle touring company, ASIAN MOTORCYCLE ADVENTURES, in December, 2001.
This motorcycle tour was filmed by a British TV production company who produces the TV show
DESTINATION ADVENTURE. The segment was shown world-wide during the spring of
2002, and a write-up about this tour has appeared so far in ASIAN WALL STREET
JOURNAL-May 5, 2002, and ACTION ASIA Magazine in their July-August edition.
Finally, there is BIRD STORY ». This magazine article is not about a motorcycle tour per se, but this episode did occur while I was on a motorcycle tour in Laos. While attending the Wat That Luang temple festival in Vientiane, I was caught in the middle of a strange and exotic religious observance that centered on two sparrows. My entire karmic future depended on the outcome.
If you would like to go on a Laos motorcycle tour similar to the ones described above, please visit ASIAN MOTORCYCLE ADVENTURES website and read about their LAOS MOTORCYCLE TOUR » offerings.
